The first of a painting series exploring nature, femininity, and boxing. The hand-painted boxing gloves showcase the duality of Black women: powerful and resilient, soft yet beautiful.
Boxing, though a sport often dominated by men, is a source of confidence and strength for many women. In this work, the violent act of boxing is paired with the delicate femininity of florals significant to the Black community.
African daisies represent strength and perseverance, along with the beauty of the African diaspora. These flowers are also known to have healing properties. Periwinkle, also known to have healing properties, is a symbol of protection, love, and legacy within the Black community. These were once popular flowers brought to the graves of our enslaved ancestors.
